Pyrenoid tubules are specialized membrane structures that traverse the starch sheath of algal pyrenoids, physically connecting thylakoid membranes to the pyrenoid matrix. They contain multiple parallel minitubules (3-4 nm wide) that form conduits between the interthylakoid stromal space and the pyrenoid matrix. These structures facilitate the transport of metabolites like ATP and sugars between photosynthetic and carbon-fixation regions of the chloroplast, while also enabling CO2 delivery to RuBisCO enzymes through associated carbonic anhydrase activity.
