Perhaps 'Schwann cell proliferation should also have "gliogenesis' (GO:0042063) as a parent?
Also, would 'tissue regeneration' (GO:0042246) or 'neurite regeneration' (GO:003102) be a proper parent for 'Schwann cell proliferation during axon regeneration'?? The relationship between the proposed Schwann cell terms and my proposed parent terms isn't entirely clear cut.

Hi Doug,
I think that we could add 'Schwann cell proliferation during axon regeneration' as a child of "axon regeneration' (GO:0031103) or 'regulation of axon extension during regeneration' (GO:0048690). I think that these terms could be proper parent.
About gliogenesis as parent of 'Schwann cell proliferation'. I think that we can insert the term 'Schwann cell proliferation' as a child of 'glia cell migration' GO:0008347, its definition is 'The orderly movement of glial cells, non-neuronal cells that provide support and nutrition, maintain homeostasis, form myelin, and participate in signal transmission in the nervous system'.
Coul be a probable solution? Thank you Erika

Hi, Erika, I don't think we should relate a 'proliferation' and a 'migration' term directly. These seem like relatively unrelated processes to me.
I think it might be OK to add 'Schwann cell proliferaton during axon regeneration' as a part_of 'axon regeneration' though.

Hi Dough,
the probable solution could be:
[i] cell proliferation; GO:0008283 ---[i] Schwann cell proliferation GO: new; ------[i] Schwann cell proliferation during axon regeneration; GO:new;
[i] axon regeneration; GO:0031103; ---[p] Schwann cell proliferation during axon regeneration; GO:new;
[p] gliogenesis; GO:0042063; ---[p] glial cell proliferation; GO:new; ------[i] Schwann cell proliferation; GO: new;
What do you think? Erika

This is close. I've expanded the concept a bit... How about this:
cell proliferation (GO:0008283) ...[i]glial cell proliferation (GO:New) ......[i]Schwann cell proliferation (GO:New) .........[i]Schwann cell proliferation during axon regeneration (GO:New)
axon regeneration (GO:0031103) ...[i]axon regeneration in the peripheral nervous system (GO:New) ......[p]Schwann cell proliferation during axon regeneration (GO:New)
gliogenesis (GO:0042063) ...[p]glial cell proliferation (GO:New)
Here are some defs as well:
Schwann cell proliferation: The expansion of a population of Schwann cells by cell division. Schwann cells are a type of glial cell in the peripheral nervous system.
Schwann cell proliferation during axon regeneration: The expansion of a population of Schwann cells by cell division in response to an axonal lesion. The newly generated Schwann cells support subsequent axon regeneration in the peripheral nervous system.
glial cell proliferation: The expansion of a population of glial cells by cell division. Glial cells exist throughout the nervous system, and include Schwann cells, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes among others.
axon regeneration in the peripheral nervous system: The regrowth of axons outside the central nervous system (outside the brain and spinal cord) following an axonal injury.

Hi, This last suggestion could be ok! I like it! So, can we add the terms now?

Hi,
I would suggest some terms: Schwann cell proliferation; Schwann cell proliferation during axon regeneration;
[i] cell proliferation; GO:0008283 ---[i[ Schwann cell proliferation GO: new ------[i[ Schwann cell proliferation during axon regeneration; GO:new
Definition Schwann cell proliferation: The multiplication or reproduction of Schwann cells, resulting in the rapid expansion of the Schwann population. Schwann cells are a type of glia cell in the peripheral nervous system. (ISBN 0878932585).
Definition Schwann cell proliferation during axon regeneration: The multiplication or reproduction of Schwann cells, resulting in the rapid expansion of the Schwann population. Schwann cells are a type of glia cell in the peripheral nervous system. Their proliferation is critical for directing axon regeneration: when an axon is severed. the Schwann cells divide to form a pathway along which the axon can regrow from the proximal stump (ISBN 0878932585).
Thank you! Erika
