Mitochondrial Genome #3278

Closed gocentral closed 9 years ago

A single copy of the mitochondrial genome. Several copies can be found in an individual mitochondrion (GO:0005739). The mitochondrial genome is much smaller than the nuclear genome, circular and does not contain junk DNA.

Suggested Ontology: Mitochondrial Genome is found in Mitochondria which are found in the cytoplasm in eukaryotic cells. Perhaps: mitochondrial_component

Synonyms: Mitochondrial DNA, mtDNA

The GO cellular component ontology has 'mitochondrial chromosome' (GO: 0000262), which is not exactly the same, but is the closest thing that fits into the scope of GO. I've added 'related' (i.e. non-exact) synonyms to the existing term to help with searching; we won't add new terms.

You might also find the Sequence Ontology term 'mitochondrial_sequence' (SO:0000737) useful. See http:// song.sourceforge.net/ , especially http://song.sourceforge.net/SO\_view/ index.html and http://song.sourceforge.net/SO\_view/ term_tables.html#mitochondrial_sequence
