I am fine with all of these with 2 comments: 1) Can we use pituitary gland development etc as the primary terms to be consistent with the anatomical dictionaries. The FMA, the adult mouse anatomical dictionary and the medaka anatomies in OBO use pituitary as the primary term with hypophysis cerebri as a synonym.Zebrafish uses hypophysis. Maybe we can get zebrafish to change their primary term name? 2) Could we add a sentence describing what the pituitary, neurophysis and adenophysis are?

In many organisms the terms anterior and posterior in regards to the pituitary are not valid so adenohypophysis and neurohypophysis are used to describe the structures and their makeup. The name hypophysis is much more prevalent in Gray's Anatomy. The vasculature which perfuses the structure is also called the hypophyseal artery and the hypothalamic-hypophyseal portal veins. So it is more consistent to call the structure composed of the adenohypophysis and neurohypophysis enervated by the hyppophyseal artery and hypothalamic-hypophyseal portal veins the hypophysis. I can write a short description for each term if that is desirable most of the time GO seems to discourage this. Here are short descriptions of the adenohypophysis and neurohypophysis:

adenohypophysis This lobe of the hypophysis derived from ectoderm and contains cells that produce prolactin, growth hormone, thyroid-stimulating hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone and proopiomelanocortin.

neurohypophysis An extension of the hypothalamus that is composed largely of the axons of hypothalamic neurons which extend downward as a large bundle behind the adenohypophysis. These neurons secrete antidiuretic hormone (vasopressin) and oxytocin.

Dear Ceri

I am fine with your definitions and DAG structure. Here are other possible descriptions of adenohypophysis and neurohypophysis. Can they be useful?

adenohypophysis

The adenohypophysis is a pea-size gland of the endocrine system and comprises the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. Under the influence of the hypothalamus, the adenohypophysis produces and secretes several peptide hormones, for example thyroid-stimulating hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, that regulate many physiological processes including stress, growth, and reproduction.

neurohypophysis

The neurohypophysis comprises the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland and it is part of the endocrine system. It consists mainly of axons of hypothalamic neurons which extend downward as a large bundle behind the adenohypophysis. These neurons secrete hormones like vasopressin and oxytocin into the capillaries of the hypophyseal circulation.

Thank you Erika

This request overlaps with SF 11511535, which has been closed. Once the new Neurodevelopment terms are committed..hopefully next week (~8/15), it would be good if someone could tackle this request. We'd really like to use these terms. -Doug

Hi Doug,

Which is SF 11511535? The search facility on sourceforge won't find it for me.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hi,

We already have terms 'neurophysis development' and 'adenophysis development'. Should I be adding 'neurohypophysis development' and 'adenohypophysis development' as synonyms or new terms?

Thanks,

Jennifer

Would I be right in adding 'hypophysis development' as an exact synonym of 'pituitary gland development'?

Ah, I just found the note above:

"hypophysis development exact synonym: pituitary gland development"

That's one problem solved.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Concluding remarks:

These should be used as exact synonyms adenophysis = adenohypophysis = anterior pituitary gland neurophysis = neurohypophysis = posterior pituitary gland hypophysis = pituitary = pituitary gland

I think you could also add the part_of chain going up the tree for the "x morphogenesis" terms as in nervous system morphogenesis ---[p]central nervous system morphogenesis ------[p]brain morphogenesis ----------[p]forebrain morphogenesis -------------[p]diencephalon morphogenesis -----------------[p]pituitary gland morphogenesis ---------------------[p]adenophysis morphogenesis

I would NOT do that for the formation terms however.
