The reaction can occur in both directions [PMID: 14685263]. This enzyme occupies a central position in sphingolipid and glycerophospholipid metabolism [PMID: 16905542]. Up- and down-regulation of its activity has been linked to mitogenic and pro-apoptotic signalling in a variety of mammalian cell types [PMID: 16905542]. Unlike EC 2.7.8.3, ceramide cholinephosphotransferase, CDP-choline cannot replace phosphatidylcholine as the donor of the phosphocholine moiety of sphingomyelin [PMID: 7093220].

Hi,
Based on PMID:14976195 and PMID:14685263 could we have molecular function term for EC 2.7.8.27?
I suggest sphingomyelin synthase activity as this is the official enzyme name, see http://www.expasy.org/cgi-bin/nicezyme.pl?2.7.8.27
We already have GO:0047493 ceramide cholinephosphotransferase activity for EC 2.7.8.3 (http://www.expasy.org/enzyme/2.7.8.3).
Thanks, Varsha
