parentage? glycol biosynthetic process #4842

Hi,

Just going off the definitions, I was wondering if "glycol metabolic process" should be a child of "polyol metabolic process" since alcohols having 2 hydroxyl groups would be a subset of any polyheydric (Containing at least two hydroxyl groups., according to dictionary.com) alcohol.

"glycol metabolic process" - The chemical reactions and pathways involving glycol, any of a class of alcohols having 2 hydroxyl groups in each molecule.

"polyol metabolic process" - The chemical reactions and pathways involving a polyol, any polyhydric alcohol.

Was also wondering if 'polyhydric alcohol metabolism' would be less obscure that 'polyol metabolism' for the primary term name.

and if it's worth having a term for polyhydric alcohol metab, would it also be worth having a term for monohydric alcohol metab, which could be a grouping term for all the monohydric alcohols, e.g. methanol, ethanol, etc.

I'm not sure about glycols, mainly because ChEBI has diols and polyols as siblings (they take polyol to mean 3 or more hydroxyls). Since we're trying to be consistent with ChEBI, it would be better to add a term for diol metabolism, and put glycols and other diols under it (there are two -diol metabolism terms under polyol metabolism now).

Likewise, because ChEBI uses 'diol' and 'polyol' I'd include the *hydric alcohol wordings as exact synonyms.

ok? m

Consistency with ChEBI does seem best. So, if ChEBI defines polyols as having at least 3 OH groups, then adding the diol metabolism terms and moving the two -diol metabolism terms currently under polyol metabolism to be under the new general diol term seems appropriate. Can we add a term for monohydric as well, for organizational purposes?

oh, and we should update our def of polyol metabolism to be clear that it is for things with 3 or more OH's.

added monohydric alcohol metabolic process GO:0034308 monohydric alcohol biosynthetic process GO:0034309 monohydric alcohol catabolic process GO:0034310 diol metabolic process GO:0034311 diol biosynthetic process GO:0034312 diol catabolic process GO:0034313

adjusted definition of polyol in metabolism, biosynth, catabolism terms to specify three or more -OH groups; moved diol terms accordingly

-hydric alcohol synonyms for diol, polyol metabolism etc. terms

please check -- I may have missed some term moves! m
