The process by which seed mucilage expands through hydration and breaks the outer cell wall that encapsulates the whole seed upon imbibition. sorry, one line was missing: I was going to propose

I had a hard time in choosing from

part_of seed development and part_of seed germination

A number of publications mention that mucliage also probably has a role in seed dispersal in addition to its role in seed germination, presumably seed dispersal occurs before germination, this was the reason I chose 'seed development' as the parent term.

For example:

"Seed mucilage has been hypothesized to play a role in germination as an oxygen barrier and in seed dispersal (Gutterman and Shemtov, 1996). However, the function of seed mucilage in Arabidopsis remains unclear."

Seed development seems like a safe option but either or both sets of parentage sound good to me.
