I really dislike all of the cell surface binding terms, because they don't identify any specific thing that's being bound. Different gene products might bind different molecules on the surface of any given cell, and "cell surface binding" doesn't let you conclude anything about what the gene products might have in common.

Hi Midori,
I can see your point; but as we do have GO:0043499 eukaryotic cell surface binding, I will make these annotations to that term instead, or were you planning to obsolete this term?
Thanks, V

I would like to be able to make GO:0043499 obsolete, but I don't think anything will happen any time soon (not least simply because we have so much else to do). If we ever do make it obsolete, we'll recommend something to use instead; you might as well use GO:0043499 in the meantime.
When column 16 becomes available in the annotation file, you can put the Cell Ontology ID for platelet (CL:0000233) there.

Will do, thanks Midori

Hi,
I'm not sure about these terms, as they are cell type specific.
NT: platelet cell surface binding Defn: Interacting selectively with any component on the surface of platelet. is_a: GO:0043499 eukaryotic cell surface binding
NT: activated platelet cell surface binding Defn: Interacting selectively with any component on the surface of an activated platelet. is_a: platelet cell surface binding
NT: resting platelet cell surface binding Defn: Interacting selectively with any component on the surface of a resting platelet. is_a: platelet cell surface binding
Any comments, advice etc much appreciated!
Thanks, Varsha
