Degranulating platelets release a lot of different specific proteins. Is a term for each needed / appropriate?
Original comment by: deustp01
I requested this term on the basis that we already have
GO:0002554 serotonin secretion by platelet GO:0002555 histamine secretion by platelet
I don't know much about platelet biology and can see that serotonin and histamine may be secreted in response to more specific stimuli, than fibrinogen which may be released more generally during degranulation. In the paper I am reading (PMID:19190246) they only mention fibrinogen.
If the GO editors agree that it is inappropriate for a term to be created for fibrinogen secretion then that is fine by me.

I didn't read the paper in depth; I just skimmed. But if I'm interpreting the experiment correctly, they showed that fibrinogen secretion is impaired in the mutant, but didn't specifically test whether the effect was specific for fibrinogen (i.e. I don't think they looked at whether secretion of other proteins was also affected). The stuff about alpha and delta granules seems to suggest that the defect might be more general.
A possible compromise might be to add 'protein secretion by platelet' (or even 'protein secretion involved in platelet degranulation') and put a fibrinogen ID in column 16. But before I do anything, I'll ask Alex to look at this item, because he worked on the existing platelet degranulation terms.

Midori's logic sounds right. Maybe a useful extension would be to have two direct part_of children of platelet degranulation, "protein secretion by platelet" and "small molecule secretion by platelet". The histamine and serotonin terms, if they are kept, become is_a children of small molecule secretion and fibrinogen, if created, becomes an is_a child of protein secretion.
A possible is_a parent for the "protein secretion by platelet" term could be GO:0009306 protein secretion.
There is probably some generality in this because while most of the secretory granules I can think of contain only a single molecule of interest to biologists, I bet it's a rare granule that in fact truly contains and releases only one thing.

OK, thanks. If there are no further comments by the beginning of next week, I'll add "protein secretion by platelet".

I'm happy with this outcome.
