T helper terms for IEDB #7446

Closed gocentral closed 9 years ago

We (IEDB/OBI) need the following terms:

with definition= An immune response in which helper T cells becoming activated through TCR signaling, resulting in the production of cytokines that increase ('help') other B and T cells immune responses. Parentage is difficult as GO currently has GO:0042088 : T-helper 1 type immune response & GO:0042092 : T-helper 2 type immune response , but no parent for these two. We cannot specify to the level of Th1 or 2, but instead need our terms to appear above them. The term GO:0002456 : T cell mediated immunity is a sibling of the Th1 & 2 terms, but its definition implies that it could be their parent (Any process involved in the carrying out of an immune response by a T cell.) and the parent of our terns too? Your guidance is appreciated.

Randi,

Thank you for your request.

The terms, "T helper 1 type immune response" and "T helper 2 type immune response" have the is_a parent "adaptive immune response based on somatic recombination of immune receptors built from immunoglobulin superfamily domains". They are types of adaptive immune response mediated by either Th1 or Th2 cells, respectively, in combination with other cell types, including dendritic cells and B cells. Thus these terms were not made a children to "T cell immunity", which is a term that is intended to cover processes carried out primarily by T cells. I realize this is subtle distinction and perhaps one open to argument, but Th1 and Th2 responses really refer to specific patterns of adaptive immune responses carried out by multiple cell types.

As for the terms you name, they could perhaps be restated in more classical immunological language as provision of T cell help provision of T cell help to T cells provision of T cell help to B cells

I, however, would prefer to modify your suggested names slightly, and would argue the ones I name above should be included as synonyms.

What we are talking about here are types of regulation. The following term stanzas represent my suggestion for term names, definitions, and placement for these terms.

[Term] id: ID:0000000 name: helper T cell enhancement of adaptive immune response namespace: biological_process def: "Positive regulation of an adaptive immune response mediated via cytokine production by helper T cell." [GOC:add] synonym: "provision of T cell help" EXACT [] is_a: GO:0002824 ! positive regulation of adaptive immune response based on somatic recombination of immune receptors built from immunoglobulin superfamily domains

[Term] id: ID:0000001 name: helper T cell enhancement of T cell mediated immune response namespace: biological_process def: "Positive regulation of a T cell mediated immune response mediated via cytokine production by a helper T cell." [GOC:add] synonym: "helper T cell enhancement of T cell mediated immunity" EXACT [] synonym: "provision of T cell help to T cell" EXACT [] is_a: GO:0002711 ! positive regulation of T cell mediated immunity is_a: ID:0000000 ! helper T cell enhancement of adaptive immune response

[Term] id: ID:0000002 name: helper T cell enhancement of B cell mediated immune response namespace: biological_process def: "Positive regulation of a B cell mediated immune response mediated via cytokine production by a helper T cell." [GOC:add] synonym: "helper T cell enhancement of B cell mediated immunity" EXACT [] synonym: "provision of T cell help to B cell" EXACT [] is_a: GO:0002714 ! positive regulation of B cell mediated immunity is_a: ID:0000000 ! helper T cell enhancement of adaptive immune response

I've attached a file to this entry that shows graphically the placement of this term in the GO hierarchy (note that only upward links from the new terms are shown).

I welcome your comments on this proposal.

Thanks,

Alex

Thanks for the defintions and term placements Alex

Added in your terms as: helper T cell enhancement of adaptive immune response ; GO:0035397 helper T cell enhancement of T cell mediated immune response ; GO:0035398 helper T cell enhancement of B cell mediated immune response ; GO:0035399

thanks, Becky
