RNA granules #8510

I would propose several changes in the cytoplasmic RNPs ontology according to a paper published last week in Science (PubMed=21436445)

  1. create a new term for RNA granules:

Name: RNA granules Category: component definition: Granules in the cytoplasm composed of RNAs and proteins involved in the posttranscriptional control of gene expression. Different classes of RNA granules (RGs) exist, depending on the cell and on the biological context, such as the stress granule, cytoplasmic mRNA processing body or the P granule.

child of GO:0030529 ribonucleoprotein complex and GO:0044444 cytoplasmic part

PubMed=21436445;

  1. Define a list of children terms for these granules and modify their ontology:

2a. GO:0043186 P granule The meiotic nuage is clearly a ribonucleoprotein complex and I would propose to change its ontology and put it as child of both GO:xxxxxx:RNA granules and GO:0060293 germ plasm

2b. GO:0033391 chromatoid body same as 2a, child of GO:xxxxxx:RNA granules and GO:0060293 germ plasm

2c. GO:0000932 cytoplasmic mRNA processing body child of GO:xxxxxx:RNA granules. It will not really change its ontology, just add an intermediate

2d. GO:0010494 stress granule child of GO:xxxxxx:RNA granules. It will not really change its ontology, just add an intermediate

Hi Sylvain,

I created a new term 'RNA granule ; GO:0035770' and gave it the children: GO:0043186 P granule GO:0033391 chromatoid body GO:0000932 cytoplasmic mRNA processing body GO:0010494 stress granule GO:0071598 neuronal granule

RNA granule ; GO:0035770 A non-membranous macromolecular complex containing proteins and translationally silenced mRNAs. RNA granules contain proteins that control the localization, stability, and translation of their RNA cargo. Different types of RNA granules (RGs) exist, depending on the cell type and cellular conditions. PMID: 16520386 PMID: 21436445 GOC: sp

thanks, Becky
