NTR: ternary (protein) complex assembly #8784

Hi, for annotation of SOX12_M in PMID: 18505825 I will need the following new term: GO:0006461 protein complex assembly --< GO:NEW ternary (protein) complex assembly [defn: The aggregation, arrangement and bonding together of a set of components to form a ternary (protein) complex. A ternary complex refers to a protein complex containing three different molecules which are bound together. In structural biology ternary complex can be used to describe a crystal containing a protein with two small molecules bound, for example cofactor and substrate; or a complex formed between two proteins and a single substrate. In Immunology, a ternary complex can refer to the MHC-Peptide-T-cell-receptor complex formed when T cells recognize epitopes of an antigen. A ternary complex can also refer to a polymer formed by electrostatic interactions] (IDA)

Thanks, Yasmin

Hi Yasmin,

I don't think 'ternary complex' or 'ternary complex formation' is a useful term. Just knowing that complex contains 3 components doesn't give much information, especially since in this case one of the components is nucleotide sequence.

Looking at the paper, I would annotate SOX11 to: protein-DNA complex ; GO:0032993 | IPI with POU3F1 (OCT6), (and IDA) protein-DNA complex ; GO:0032993 | IPI with POU3F2 (BRN2), (and IDA)

thanks Becky
