sperm parts #9002

Required for completing MP logical definitions.

I think these should all be part of GO:0009434 ! microtubule-based flagellum ?

Maybe have a new grouping term "sperm part"?

[Term] id: NEW_GO:0009830 name: sperm connecting piece def: "the segment of the sperm flagellum that attaches to the implantation fossa of the nucleus in the sperm head; from the remnant of the centriole at this point, the axoneme extends throughout the length of the flagellum" [MP:0009830] relationship: part_of CL:0000019 ! sperm

[Term] id: NEW_GO:0009831 name: sperm midpiece def: "the highly organized segment of the sperm flagellum which begins at the connecting piece and is characterized by the presence of 9 outer dense fibers (ODFs) that lie outside each of the 9 outer axonemal microtubule doublets and by a sheath of mitochondria that encloses the ODFs and the axoneme; the midpiece terminates about one-fourth of the way down the sperm flagellum at the annulus, which marks the beginning of the principal piece" [MP:0009831] relationship: part_of CL:0000019 ! sperm

[Term] id: NEW_GO:0009832 name: sperm mitochondrial sheath relationship: part_of CL:0000019 ! sperm

[Term] id: NEW_GO:0009834 name: sperm annulus def: "the ring-like, filamentous structure located at the distal end of the midpiece of the sperm flagellum; the annulus is thought to form a diffusion barrier between the midpiece and the principal piece and serve as a stabilizing structure for tail rigidity" [MP:0009834] relationship: part_of CL:0000019 ! sperm

[Term] id: NEW_GO:0009836 name: sperm principal piece def: "the segment of the sperm flagellum where the mitochondrial sheath ends and the outer dense fibers (ODFs) associated with outer axonemal doublets 3 and 8 are replaced by the 2 longitudinal columns of the fibrous sheath (FS) which run the length of the principal piece and are stabilized by circumferential ribs; the principal piece makes up ~2/3 of the length of the sperm flagellum and is defined by the presence of the FS and of only 7 (rather than 9) ODFs which taper and then terminate near the distal end of the principal piece" [MP:0009836] relationship: part_of CL:0000019 ! sperm

[Term] id: NEW_GO:0009837 name: sperm end piece def: "the short remaining region of the sperm flagellum, which contains only the axoneme surrounded by the plasma membrane" [MP:0009837] relationship: part_of CL:0000019 ! sperm

Note for self - yes, create new grouping term "sperm part".

Hi Chris,

I added the new grouping term: GO:0097223 sperm part is_a GO:0044464 cell_part

and gave it the following child terms: GO:0097224 sperm connecting piece GO:0097225 sperm midpiece GO:0097226 sperm mitochondrial sheath GO:0097227 sperm annulus GO:0097228 sperm principal piece GO:0097229 sperm end piece All of them is_a GO: 0097223 sperm part part_of GO:0009434 ! microtubule-based flagellum

As per your suggested relationship: part_of CL:0000019 ! sperm Shall I add those links in the file scratch/xps/cellular_component_links_cell.obo? (Would this be a useful example to show at the Protege workshop maybe? In case there's time.)

Thanks, Paola

Hi Chris,

Going through my pending SF requests - I think I can close this one, I guess it'll be some time before we can work on the cross-products between "cellular component" and the Cell Type Ontology. These issues will become evident then anyway.

Thanks Paola
