[Term] id: GO:0021766 name: hippocampus development namespace: biological_process def: "The progression of the hippocampus over time from its initial formation until its mature state." [GOC:cls, GOC:dgh, GOC:dph, GOC:jid, GOC:mtg_15jun06, GO_REF:0000021, ISBN:0878937420] comment: This term was added by GO_REF:0000021. is_a: GO:0048856 ! anatomical structure development relationship: part_of GO:0021543 ! pallium development relationship: part_of GO:0021761 ! limbic system development

despite the string of xrefs after the def, there is no real def here.

As I understand, neuroscientists do not use the term hippocampus consistently, and disagree about where to draw the lines.

The ABA does not even have it. It divides the brain like this:

......is_a ABA:HPF ! Hippocampal formation .......is_a ABA:HIP ! Hippocampal region ........is_a ABA:CA ! Ammon's Horn ........is_a ABA:DG ! Dentate gyrus .......is_a ABA:RHP ! Retrohippocampal region ........is_a ABA:SUB ! Subiculum

NIF is the best source http://neurolex.org/wiki/Category:Hippocampus

"A part of the hippocampal formation consisting of a three layered cortex located in the forebrain bordered by the medial surface of the lateral ventricle, the dentate gyrus and the subiculum. It has 3 subfields termed CA1, CA2 and CA3. The term hippocampus is often used synonymously with hippocampal formation which consists of the hippocampus proper or Cornu Ammonis, the dentate gyrus and the subiculum."

I believe that GO:0021766 is referring to what is more properly called the hippocampal formation or region. This is because it has dentate gyrus formation as a child.

I don't think we can resolve the various disputes. However, I suggest we at least give GO:0021766 an exact synonym "hippocampal formation development", with a synonym xref to ABA:HPF. I would prefer having that as the primary name but this might be controversial

I am also making the logical definition reference UBERON:0002421 ! hippocampal formation

Which is the species-generic equivalent of:

xref: FMA:74038 ! Hippocampal formation xref: MA:0000189 ! hippocampal formation xref: NIF_GrossAnatomy:birnlex_715 ! Hippocampal formation xref: BTO:0000601 ! hippocampus xref: ABA:HPF ! Hippocampal formation xref: BM:Tel-HF ! hippocampal formation xref: SCTID:422867004 ! Structure of hippocampal formation

Hi Chris,

I agree with you that this is controversial. I've added to GO:0021766 ! hippocampus development a Dbxref to UBERON:0002421, and an exact synonym "hippocampal formation development" with synonym xref to ABA:HPF.

Thanks, Paola
