complement-dependent cytotoxicity #9440

Closed gocentral closed 9 years ago

gocentral commented 12 years ago

I found 'complement activation' and 'antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity' in GO, but not complement-dependent cytotoxicity. Is this a term that you can add? The IEDB needs to have it in GO to import into OBI in order to model our antibody assays in OBI. Thank you.

Hi Randi,

I think we could certainly add a new GO term for "complement-dependent cytotoxicity". Could you please suggest a definition, parent term(s) and reference(s) for it? I will also email Alex Diehl to see if he has any comments on this request and on your related others (SF 3495822 and 3495823).

Thanks, Paola

Definition: Lysis of a cell resulting from triggering of the complement cascade. Example: Complement activation and subsequent lysis of a bacterial cell as a result of the binding of IgM to the cell surface followed by the binding of complement proteins to that antibody.

I am sorry, but for this one, I need to refer to Alex Diehl. I cannot tell what its parents in GO should be.

Hi Randi and Paola,

I believe the appropriate parent for "complement-dependent cytotoxicity" is "cell-killing ; GO:0001906".

I also think that this term should have a "has_part" relationship to "complement activation ; GO:0006956".

Thanks,

Alex

Hi Alex,

Many thanks for your feedback. I'll put the term in shortly - I'm only a bit unsure about the "has_part" relationship to "complement activation ; GO:0006956". Is it not possible for the complement system to be activated and this not resulting in cell lysis? E.g. resulting instead in one of the other processes listed in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complement\_system\#Functions\_of\_the\_Complement. I'm definitely not an expert though.

Thanks, Paola

Sorry Alex, please ignore my previous comment. I now see you meant the other way round. Will update as soon as term is ready. Paola
