Hi Pascale,
Do you mean synthesis of a protein that will become part of the ECM?
We have the term 'translation ; GO:0006412' for protein biosynthesis but looking at the children, we don't capture the target of translation in terms because a lot of the translation machinery is generic.
Also, at the time of synthesis, you can't tell for sure that the protein will make it to the ECM.
I'd capture this using column 16 and the ID of the specific protein.

Along the same lines: is 'regulation of granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor production ' a valid GO term ?

Hi Pascale,
The cytokine production terms allow for annotating increased appearance of a cytokine, without knowing whether it's the synthesis or the secretion step that is responsible (the nature of the assays often don't allow this to be distinguished). The rationale behind these terms is described here:
