NTR: MLL3/4 complex #9619

PMID:21875999 (The COMPASS Family of H3K4 Methylases in Drosophila) describes three distinct complexes in Drosophila all of which methylate H3K4. These are equivalent to 3 pairs of complexes found in mammals - each pair has common members and is distinguished by containing a specific histone methyltransferase protein. At present in GO we only have terms that correspond to one pair of mammalian complexes: Set1C/COMPASS complex (defined as having either SETD1A or SETD1B) and one other specific pair member of a mammalian pair: MLL1 complex.

I've been asked to request a new term MLL3/4 complex which would correspond to then pair of mammalian complexes that contain either MLL3 or MLL4 and is equivalent to the Trr/COMPASS-like Drosophila complex in this paper. If we do this, I wonder if we should also have a more general parent of MLL1 complex - MLL1/2 complex that would be equilvalent to the Trx/COMPASS-like complex in this paper. To be honest, I am not a fan of these very specific complexes defined based on components and I'd be just as happy with a new term H3K4 methyltransferase complex but given that the other terms are already there I thought I'd ask. One concern is that I don't think MLL1/2 or MLL3/4 crop up as a names in other papers.

Thanks, Susan

Hi Susan - I suppose for the sake of completeness we should. So the new terms you'd need would be:

MLL3/4 complex MLL1/2 complex (parent to MLL1 complex)

would you also need the Drosophila-specific complexes, or would you annotate to the mammalian/yeast complex terms?

I've added:

MLL3/4 complex ; GO:0044666 MLL1/2 complex ; GO:0044665

would you mind checking the synonyms? Not sure I've got them right. Ta.

Sorry for being so slow at checking these. Noticed one issue... MLL3/4 complex ; GO:0044666 should be a histone methyltransferase complex and sibling of MLL1/2 complex ; GO:0044665. It is currently placed as a direct child of methyltransferase complex.
