diff btw 2 CC ER terms? #9656

Closed gocentral closed 9 years ago

gocentral commented 12 years ago

Hi,

What's the difference between these two terms? I'm wondering if they are just 2 names for the same thing.

GO:0032541 - cortical endoplasmic reticulum Def: A cortical network of highly dynamic tubules that are juxtaposed to the plasma membrane and undergo ring closure and tubule-branching movements.

GO:0071782 - endoplasmic reticulum tubular network Def: An endoplasmic reticulum part that comprises the membranes with high curvature in cross-section.

thx,

Karen

Hi Karen,

Recent articles suggest the terms are overlapping, in that the cortical ER (synonym: peripheral ER) includes both the flat cisternae and the curved tubules:

PMID:16469703 The peripheral ER consists of a network of membrane tubules connected by three-way junctions. It also contains membrane sheets (cisternae)

PMID:20434336 The cortical ER is an interconnected network of flat cisternae and highly curved tubules sharing a continuous lumen.

I don't know if non-cortical ER includes tubules too. I've emailed Reactome for their knowledge.

thanks.

Hi Rebecca,

Marc Gillespie (Reactome) says:

I read about some of this as it relates to membrane structures generated during gametogenesis. It was my understanding that the:

cortical endoplasmic reticulum - Arises under specific conditions (such as cellular division) and exists in a very limited plane within the cell adjacent to the plasma membrane.

endoplasmic reticulum tubular network - Is a more general term describing the physical arrangement of ER membrane folds that can occur on the nuclear side or exterior side of the ER.

I would say that "cortical endoplasmic reticulum" is a specific type of "endoplasmic reticulum tubular network".

Hope this helps.

Marc

Based on Marc's feedback, I've made 'GO:0032541 - cortical endoplasmic reticulum' is_a: 'GO:0071782 - endoplasmic reticulum tubular network'.
