Hi Val,
GO:0030796 cycloartenol 24-C-methyltransferase activity refers to EC 2.1.1.142 http://www.chem.qmul.ac.uk/iubmb/enzyme/EC2/1/1/142.html where "sterol C-methyltransferase" is indicated as "Other name" for this enzyme. I guess that's why the synonym was made broad. What appears as "Systematic name" on the enzyme web page is instead found as an exact synonym for GO:0030796. So I think that's fine to stay.
As for GO:0003838 sterol 24-C-methyltransferase activity this refers to EC 2.1.1.41 http://www.chem.qmul.ac.uk/iubmb/enzyme/EC2/1/1/41.html so two different enzymatic activities. The common parent with GO:0030796, in keeping with the EC structure, would be EC 2.1.1.-, that is methyltransferases (http://www.chem.qmul.ac.uk/iubmb/enzyme/EC2/1/1/). The EC doesn't have "sterol methytransferase".
GO:0030796 and GO:0003838 indeed have one common parent just below "methyltransferase activity", i.e. GO:0008757 S-adenosylmethionine-dependent methyltransferase activity, but I think that's fine to stay as a grouping term. You may want to check with Midori, as it seems that GO:0008757 was added by her; but as I said I think the structure is ok as is. I'm closing this item, but feel free to re-open it if you think that changes should be made.
Thanks, Paola

why does GO:0030796 cycloartenol 24-C-methyltransferase activity have broad synonym broad sterol C-methyltransferase activity
and if this is correct should it have a relationship to
GO:0003838 Name sterol 24-C-methyltransferase activity
(i.e common parent sterol methytransferase)
tks val
