dense granule (GO:0020026) #991

Hi,

Would it be possible to widen the definition of the function term: dense granule (GO:0020026), to include those present within platelets?

Platelet dense granules are secretory granules and contribute in the formation of the hemostatic plug.
They contain a highly condensed core consisting of serotonin, calcium, ATP, ADP, pyrophosphate and membrane lysosomal proteins.

(literature references: pubmed 10403682, 10877819)

Thanks,

Emily

I think that parasite dense granules are probably quite different to platelet dense granules, so I'll think this will need a new term - maybe with sensu qualifiers. Will look into it.

I agree with Jane; methinks platelet dense granules are a type of secretory granule, but 20026 is there to accommodate the bizarre biology of apicomplexans.

See if secretory granule (GO:0030141) will do; if so, add 'dense granule' as a synonym (not sure whether exact or not off the top of my head). If a disticnt term is called for, add 'platelet dense granule.' In either case, add a sensu designation to 20026.

Okay, what I'll do is change 'dense granule ; GO:0020026' to 'dense granule (sensu Apicomplexa) ; GO:0020026' and add a new term 'platelet dense granule ; GO:new' under 'secretory granule' (synonym: secretory vesicle).

Matt - it sounds like 'dense granule (sensu Apicomplexa) ; GO:0020026' should be moved from where it is now, under 'secretory granule'. How about under 'cytoplasmic vesicle' or just 'cytoplasm'?

under 'cytoplasmic vesicle' sounds like a cunning plan.

Okay, added 'platelet dense granule ; GO:0042827' under 'secretory granule'. Moved and changed name of 'dense granule ; GO:0020026' as described below.
