Creation of the .so library is completing successfully on MacOSX but is failing on ubuntu 12.04 (travisCI) and a 14.04 VM

closing as current dl hack works on ubuntu 14.04 and CentOS. Problems still exist on travis but appear to be due to use of virtualenv
