It looks like there are conflicts in rasters.py do you want to take a look at them? If you get this finished before I pull in the python version PR I'll handle the modernizing and conflicts with those changes.

Ok, I don't remember what was going on with these pull requests because we never reviewed/merged them. I think that at some point I just dumped the latest raster code into master, so we should close these pull requests, go with the code that's already in master, and work from there.
