To be pedantic, this is a backward incompatible change, so shouldn't it be released in 2.2.0 ?

I don't follow, the only difference between 2.1.0 and current HEAD is this PR

Yes, and the portage class changed, which is backwards incompatible. Anyway, it's a minor change, so it's fine I think.

ah yes you're right, i hope nobody used it though because it does nothing :)
