Document thumbnail rendering delays #568

When a user is browsing a large number of items with thumbnails, many of the images do not display. This is mostly noticeable with newly ingested items, but can also occur with older ones.

Can we document what is happening in this case? The admin view may show that the thumbnail harvest has "succeeded", but it still doesn't show up in the search views. Is the issue related to a slow rendering time or is the image still processing?

For an example, I just uploaded a large collection and most of the items have a thumbnail image attached. (https://geo.btaa.org/catalog/12d-04). I sometimes get questions from data providers as to why their images are not showing up, even after a few days. What is the best way of diagnosing and explaining this?

Maybe our schedule.rb file isn't working correctly? Something to double check with @mberkowski

Just adding a note here that @mberkowski will keep his eye on this one for a bit.

I changed the job to make it a little more verbose next time it runs. But since everything is now caught up from manual runs, we may not see useful output until another collection experiences the fault.
