Github also recommends a contributing file, which is a guide to those wanting to contribute to the project. I sort of did this in an informal way on the different pages at https://geodesicsolutions.org - so lets organize it into a single contributing guide. There is no "official" starting template that github provides, but you can find plenty of examples by searching for contributing github on google.
Maybe a few rough ideas:
Point to discussions for questions or community discussion.
Point to issues for reporting problems. (And the "issues" on the website repo to report issues for the website itself).
Encourage discussion before working on anything that might have a large impact, like template redesign etc.
??? I'll edit this over time if I think of other things to include.
We added a code of conduct, that had a very good starting template that we liked so much we used it unchanged to start with.
