That's a good idea regardless (although some of the images in this repo are designed to be printed, so perhaps that optimization wouldn't be appropriate; not that I've looked into quite what it does).
But I do think that it's better to steer people to storing photos in services that are meant for it (and ideally, those that require or at least support open licenses).

The frontmatter could include a
photos
key, with a list of URLs of photos to display in a gallery at the bottom of the page. Could link them from Wikimedia Commons, Flickr, or wherever. Local uploads too, although we'll have to keep an eye on repo size I guess.
