I managed to get the translations working, and added a set of German texts (to go along with the existing partially-complete Czech texts which weren't being used). I'm not 100% sure how you want to deploy these, but I put the .mo files under the resources directory. If you uncomment the line "deTexts.install()" then everything appears in German, I guess this should be done automatically somehow. Worth a test.
I also corrected a few typos and changed "Virtual Earth" to "Bing Maps". Maybe there are also some changes in gdal2tiles.py necessary because of this change (eg references to dev.virtualearth.net) ?
