Feature Improvement to Appointment Date

While I love that you are taking the extra step to help users make sure that they key in the a proper appointment date in the future, would it be better for the app to warn but not block such occurrences?

For example, a doctor might wish to migrate his existing schedule of patients, containing both past and future appointments for safekeeping sake, and for record keeping purposes should the same patient come back to them again.

Perhaps an easier fix would be to permit such addition, but alert users through an UI element which warns them that the appointment has already elapsed, rather than implementing logic to prevent such additions?
