For regions in Canada that are sensitive to errors in the background methane fields, which are also affected by less data coverage from TROPOMI, it may be helpful to include the option of swapping out boundary conditions from the results of a global inversion. Within this tiered approach, if (a) the background fields are from a global inversion (possibly using an alternative dataset, GOSAT or in-situ data), (b) the buffer regions are optimized using TROPOMI with a “softer” regularization factor γ=0.25, and (c) the ROI is optimized using a higher regularization factor γ=0.75–1.0, it may produce the most reasonable results over Canada where the focus is on the local emissions within the ROI and the errors from the outside regions are minimized.
