tick labels in trunk look much worse than stable.

in the attached screenshot, stable is on the left, and trunk is on the right.  
compare how 12am looks different.

Yes; this is due to the master's experimental use of canvas text.  It has many 
advantages, but introduces problems of its own, as you've found out.  We're 
most likely going to move it to a plug-in, and improve areas such as these, 
before the 0.8 release.
