The autogen script says I need automake >= 1.1, but after I commented out the
related variable inside, it worked:
checking for automake >= 1.9...
testing automake-1.11... found 1.11.3

Hi Jerry,
very awesome application you have, a good font manager (especially for GTK) is
really missing.
One feature that should be simple but is great for logo design is to be able to
choose the displayed text freely in the "Browse" view. What do you think? Also,
some fonts have weird names where I would prefer to check how my custom text
looks, quickly. I didn't find that option.
Cheers & thanks,
Wolf

Sounds like a good idea to me.
I'll look into adding that over the weekend.
Thanks.

I think you loose too much vertical pixels, with four horizontal bars (from
title to the lower one). I find it esthetically wrong too. Why do you use a
central one?
The "waterfall" and other buttons could appear in the lower bar (you already
display categories and collections buttons) in this vertical area. Furthermore,
the slider from small A to big A appears too large.
Alternatively, everything could appear at the top. It's more conventional.
Anyway, it's an excellent work. Thanks.

Not sure what you mean by four vertical bars. If you are running in an
environment that supports HeaderBar, the controls become part of the window
decoration. So you can't really count that.
As far as the central location of the selector, it's the only thing that breaks
up those two sections. Otherwise they would simply run into each other
separated only by a pixel?
In any case, I would really need to see a mockup of your suggestion to decide
if it's an improvement worth pursuing or not.

It would help to know what OS and version the problem occurs on.
I only test on Fedora and Ubuntu, Arch has a package in AUR font-manager-svn so
I know it builds on current versions of those systems without workarounds.

Hi,
I like the new look. Lots of useful functionality there.
Made a gmail a/c just 4 this.
I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 x64 and I notice that it lists system fonts and user
fonts.
All well and good. However, I install fonts to both root and local folders
depending on their use, but when I try and remove a font from the normal user
UI it only lists user fonts.
It would be good if you could add a pop-up with 'this is a system font do you
really want to remove it?' and then a sudo password prompt.
Then you wouldn’t have to start Font Manager as root to manage these system
font files,
What do you think? Is that possible? Or can you do that and I'm missing
something?

Running Font Manager as root is not supported/recommended.
System-wide font installation/removal using PolicyKit may be included in a
future version, far future. Very, very low priority.
However, only fonts installed through the application would be available for
removal.
Font Manager will never include any option that would allow for deleting system
files that it doesn't own.
Of course, the code is open so anyone is welcome to do as they please. But I
certainly won't be implementing that.
Sorry.

Hi Jerry
Thanks for swift reply.
That makes sense I suppose.
It was more just to manage a fonts package I downloaded thru Ubuntu Software
Centre that had loads of superfluous fonts.
I thought this feature might have added some extra usefulness. But as you point
out it's probably not a good idea- and there's other ways of doing it.
Thanks again.

Just installed this and first impressions are that it is light years beyond the
version in the Ubuntu 14.04 repository. It addresses one of the two main
problems I had with the original. The other issue remains. They are:
1) Slow start up. Five minutes for the interface to be displayed, a further
five minutes for the interface to become responsive. During the first five
minutes, hard disk read at 50Mb/s and one of four cores maxed, followed by one
maxed core for the next five minutes. The interface is up in seconds and
responsive in under a minute. Well done!
2) When I change the sample text (I use font-manager to manage lots of
Japanese fonts) it does not persist between sessions. I would like to change
the default sample text so that it is always used.
Overall, very impressed with what you've done with this. I'm sure it will be
no major difficulty to allow the user to persistently change the sample text.
Thanks for your hard work.

Thanks.
Your suggestion is implemented in SVN and if you are using the PPA an update
should be available shortly.
Still plan on allowing users to change preview text everywhere and save
different samples. But haven't had much time lately...

Upgrade has just come through. Working as claimed. Fantastic! This has
become a real pleasure to use. Thanks again for making this such a useable and
useful application.
