Sigh, can you give a clue or hint as to what was happening at the time, what is in the Status window, what version of Grbl, what serial chip is on your Arduino board? I am not prescient nor a mind reader.
I was connecting the xpro v3 control board with 0.9j this happens upon load, as it is reading the settings. I have tried with down level builds as well.
What do you have $10 set to? GrblPanel .13 is more forgiving of that setting in 0.9j being 'correct' so a bit surprised to see an error. Can you screen shot the Status area when this happens? (With Verbose on). That will show if there is data corruption or not.
ee the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

** JIT Debugging ** To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this application or computer (machine.config) must have the jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section. The application must also be compiled with debugging enabled.
For example:
When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer rather than be handled by this dialog box.
