There has been some movement on sidenotes, see @gwern https://www.gwern.net/Sidenotes (h/t @nhoizey)
Clean design, ugly markup: https://sanchom.github.io/pollen-footnotes.html
Nice overall: https://www.inkandswitch.com/capstone-manuscript.html with some smart CSS for column widths (that CSS is from a page with too-wide columns.
Lovely design, left notes: https://practicaltypography.com/page-margins.html
TODO: review the HTML for these and settle on a page layout approach, sidenote markup+CSS. Page layout should be evaluated for the flexibility of columns, sidenote CSS should allow for inline asides that are rendered between paragraphs.
Footnotes are much better now (floated asides).
Good foundation now, with a CSS grid-based pale. But I'm leaving this open until I consider ratios and breakpoints
Get side items to collapse nicely. Maybe only progressive?
Three columns: nav, content, notes. First collapses first, then third. Full bleed photos.
Nice ratios here: https://thepointmag.com/
