Hey, sorry you are struggling with this.
A common cause is if an extension, or a key bind imported from VSCode is overriding the CTRL+K in Cursor. Can you do the following for me:
Open the Keyboard Shortcuts page (you can search for it using CTRL+P) In the search bar, there are some icons at the far right, that look like this:
Click the first one, then click into the search box and press CTRL+K. This should show up all the shortcuts that are bound to CTRL+K.
Can you drop a screenshot of all the results?
By default, they should look like this (I am on Mac to CTRL is replaced with CMD here):
If there are more, or less, this suggests you may have something that has interfered. Drop a screenshot and we'll see if we can figure out what's going wrong.
Thanks so much for posting this! I had this exact issue because I had forgotten that Ctrl + L opened the chat, and had used a ctrl +k-based shortcut to do so.
As soon as I remembered the correct keyboard shortcut I followed your troubleshooting steps to identify my mistake, rectify it, and was good to go.
Not sure if this is worth a call-out on the common issues page in the docs, but I feel like this type of issue would be well served there, so folks don't have to come here.
Unless you can build a fortification system in the IDE to alert users to the misconfiguration, or otherwise ward away folks from doing this to themselves.
Yes it's a user error (in my case) but hopefully there's a way this kind of footgun can either be easily reversed, or prevented in the first place a bit better.
Thanks! This was exactly what I needed for myself.
Hey Dan,
Thanks for reaching out. I enclosed the 2 screenshots regarding the CTRL+k Shortcuts.
Thanks for your help.
