Slaughterhouse Five and Breakfast of Champions were books my friends and I referenced repeatedly in high school. (Mostly for the humor, as the poignancy was on the periphery of our comprehension. That came later.)

I haven't read BoC, but I have read S5 a few times, and listened to the audiobook.

I was reminded of Billy a lot in an HBO made-for-tv move called "When Trumpets Fade", which is up there with Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan, Enemy at the Gates, and Born on the Fourth of July, IMO.

It's about a private (lowest rank) soldier that's basically a coward who claims to be mentally ill and keeps trying to get discharged, but due to some luck and circumstance, and people dying all around him, he ends up getting promoted several times.
