Broflake: fix or remove unfinished UI features before launch #171

Goal for this epic:

Finish the UI to a basic level of user comprehension and functionality, or remove the unfinished features until we can make them more comprehensible.

By the time this epic is finished, we'll meet the following exit criteria:

The Broflake UI doesn't need to ship with a ton of fancy features, but what features are there must be comprehensible in all states of operation. Currently, I don't understand much of what's going on with the UI, and Broflake behaves as broken software. When we're done, I will understand the UI, and Broflake will not appear to be broken.
