Add tests about user preferences #1049

This issue to write tests of the code changes made in #1024. I'll write some example tests first, after which @brontolosone can add more tests.

@lognaturel suggested that it's probably most efficient for me to go ahead and write these tests, which I'm happy to do. I'll go ahead and unassign @brontolosone. I've also bumped this issue to the next release cycle.
