Problems with accessibility #9

Dear developers. Could you solve the problems described above? Steps to reproduce::

  1. Boot into Live mode using Solus-MATE-4.3;
  2. Press ALT+F2, type orca, and press Enter;
  3. Start the installation process;
  4. A list of six or seven languages is displayed. Use the Tab key to move the focus to this list and move it down with the cursor arrow. At some point, Orca says something like Scrol Frame. To get to the big list of language choices, use the Orca flat review, find English or something similar, and then press the keyboard shortcut that corresponds to the left mouse click;
  5. The same situation in the case of choosing the keyboard layout;
  6. If there is no internet connection, and the check box responsible for automatically determining the location is not checked, the blind user is stuck at the time zone selection stage. That is, the blind user can install Solus only when actively connected to the Internet;
  7. In the dialog where you need to specify a username and password, focus on the Cancel button. Then press the Tab key. Orca will say something like Text. Could you sign these edit fields so that the blind user knows exactly what they are for? The edit fields that are used to enter the password, as well as to confirm the password, must also be signed;
  8. In the same dialog, click the Add now button. Then - press Tab. Orca will say it s a button, but it won t say its name because it s not signed either. That is, a button that invokes the dialog to create a new user. It would be nice if a blind user could access all elements to interact with the installer using keys such as TAB and Shift+Tab, and activate these elements using a space or Enter. I will be very grateful if you solve these problems.

There is another aspect of this problem: the user does not automatically receive the accompanying information provided by the installer (ie he must constantly use the flat review). For example, after running the installer, Orca says something like Scrol Frame. It would be great if we heard instead: "select a language" and the cursor immediately enters the language selection list. A similar concept could be applied at other stages of the installer s work. In most cases, after the user clicks the Next button, he does not receive any information, and he has to investigate for himself whether something happened after clicking this button. This works perfectly in a dialog where the installer asks us if we really wish to install Solus. Immediately after the dialogue, Orca reads it. By the way: finding out that the installation is complete is not so simple. The installation process completes and a dialog is displayed asking you to restart your computer, but Orca does not read it. Personally, at first I thought that something went wrong. Then I pressed Tab, and heard the name of the button, if I m not mistaken, Restart. Then, just in case, I explored the screen with a flat review. I will be very grateful for your attention to this problem.

I just wanted to confirm very limited accessibility of Solus installation from the blind user perspective. There is also no Braille support implemented into this distribution which may be important to a lot of blind users. As much as I love the concept of Solus project, unfortunately I was unable to complete the installation on my own without any sighted help. Definitely, some improvement in this area is necessary and it will be highly appreciated. With the best wishes, Pawel

@lobap123 I was able to install Solus without the help of people who see my experience above. But the conditions for the blind user are really to some extent extreme. Regarding Braille support: if you are interested, you could register on dev.getsol.us, request inclusion in the repository of required packages, and request inclusion of Braille support in ISO. The Solus repository only has Liblouis, but this package is not part of the ISO.

It might be that I tested my installation on a really old laptop, however, the same machine runs now Ubuntu 21.10 with not much trouble and the installation process was relatively smooth compering with the Solus installation.

Solus needs to include BRLTTY package for their Braille support.

I will come back to this in about 3 months since I am going to be very busy with my daily job til the end of March.

Take care,

Pawel

BRLTTY also needs to be adjusted in a certain way, but unfortunately I do not understand these nuances, because we have very few people in Ukraine who have somehow managed to get a Braille display.
