Summary
In GNOME tweaks in a live session, some fonts get shown as cryptic symbols.
Open tweaks, then navigate to fonts section. Try to change font for i.e. Interface text. In the font selection window, selected font gets shown as cryptic symbols in the preview field at the bottom.
When you click select, those symbols then also appear where the font name should get displayed:
Please note that this does not happen for all fonts. Some fonts get displayed properly, as for instance Umpush Light Oblique
Please also note, that this only affects the font representation in tweaks itself. The selected fonts gets displayed properly by the system itself.
I should also mention that if you copy those cryptic symbols from the preview field at the bottom and paste into a text editor, they correctly appear as The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
This is kind of a bad first impression anyhow.
As of the greenish fragments you see on my screenshots, I believe they are due to my old graphics card and the new rendering introduced in GNOME 46 as discussed here and would disappear if I started the system with GSK_RENDERER=gl set in /etc/environment, though I am unable to do so in a live session, I guess.
