fix empty cells for custom description functions - again #23

Hi Max,

sorry for the piecewise approach. This fixes issue #21 for the case of >2 by levels; it also fixes the travis-CI failure caused by the last PR. I've added a lot of additional test cases - I hope I've covered all of them now.
