Chromecast performance get severely slow cycling through HTML content #692

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
Background:
In our app, we require the swapping out HTML element to load different
features. Ex. Cycling through Google Maps, YouTube, and Calendar. However,
within the first 10 to 15 minutes the Chromecast performance degrades to the
point where it either hangs or crashes. Basically the user can’t use our app
for more than 10 minutes which is impacting our entire experience.

What steps will reproduce the problem?
I’ve created a very simple webpage at
http://www.scarlatt.com/performance_test.html to reproduce the issue. Simply
Cast this page on Chromecast using an app. This page basically cycles through
YouTube (using embedded iframe) and Google maps (also inside an iframe) every
30 seconds.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected behavior: The page should continue to cycle through YouTube and Maps
non-stop or for a very long time (hours at least).
Actual behavior: When this page is loaded on Chromecast you’ll notice that
the performance starts to degrade at around 10 minutes. After that Chromecast
basically hangs, neither YouTube or Google Maps load.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
We’ve verified this issue on both Chromecast V1 and V2.
The firmware for Chromecast V2 is 1.16.44433
The firmware for Chromecast V1 is 1.7.46278

Please provide any additional information below.
Since profiling doesn’t work well on Chromecast we haven’t been able to get
it’s performance results. However we’ve profiled on the Chrome browser and
everything seems stable and runs not stop.

Attached the test html file pointed to by the url above.

Please provide below information:
1) When did you start seeing this issue?
2) Is it reproducible on both Android and iOS?
3) What type of receiver are you using?
4) Please reproduce this issue and share the receiver logs.

Here's the additional information:
1) When did you start seeing this issue?
- We started noticing the performance issues several weeks ago but we were
still adding features. Then last week after feature complete we spent a good
amount of time narrowing down the issue and trying to work around it without
luck.

2) Is it reproducible on both Android and iOS?
- Currently we are only making an android app. The performance issue seems to
be a Chromecast issue, unrelated to the Android client.

3) What type of receiver are you using?
- Custom receiver

4) Please reproduce this issue and share the receiver logs.
- Attached receiver console logs. This time the app on Chromecast screen only
runs for a few minutes before stalling, probably due to the remote debugging
connection. After the Chromecast hangs, sometime it restarts or goes back to
the default home screen.

Thanks for the info. Is this app in production? If so, please share the Play
Store link for it.

Thanks for looking into it.

The app is not yet in production. If you have a test app to cast the URL
(http://www.scarlatt.com/performance_test.html) it should result in the same
behavior. Let me know if you do not have such a way to try that.

The status is still marked as "NeedInfo". I'm wondering what other info is
needed. This issue is blocking us from releasing the app. Any way to up the
priority to Critical?
