If you still work on this extension, you could read about
http://flowplayer.org/ to see if you could use it with the YouPlayer extension.
The Flowplayer let you play videos directly from youtube servers without
need of use their flash player. Read on the flowplayer blog to find the
youtube plugin, and you could develop other plugins to could make
flowplayer take videos from other video services.
