CAPA management cluster with existing infrastructure

Story

-As a cluster admin, I want to create a management cluster in an existing VPC in order to enable users to develop and to test their applications on the new clusters.

Background

Our customers need to test their applications on the clusters as soon as possible in order to provide feedback to us. One way to accelerate this activity is to deploy the clusters into a flexible environment (fewer security constraints).

The customer will provide the following AWS network resources for a management cluster configured based on our specification:

• VPC;
• control plane subnets (one for each availability zone);
• machine pool subnets (one for each machine pool and availability zone);
• route tables;
• security groups;
• transit gateway;
• transit gateway attachment;

Requirements

• mc-bootstrap needs have a configuration setting for specifying an existing VPC;
• mc-bootstrap needs to have configuration settings for specifying existing subnets for the control plane and the machine pools;

Tasks

• [ ] Add support to mc-bootstrap to specify which existing VPC and subnets must be used by the management cluster;
• [ ] Test creation of a management cluster into existing infrastructure.

Remarks

• Deploying into existing infrastructure is only temporary and it will not be supported by our product going forward. We plan on having the AWS resources managed by controllers. See CAPA private networking issue;
• We agreed with the customer that we can recreate the clusters and the infrastructure as needed in order to accelerate development and feedback loops;
• We agreed with the customer that we'll take over the management of these AWS resources after we have our own automation in place;

This is on hold for now. We decided to try to update the CAPA controllers to meet our networking requirements. It might also not be needed if we are successful.
