Requiring classrooms or prohibiting laboratories for lectures (or vice versa
for the labs) is the correct way to go.
An alternative is to setup an external managed department (External Manager
toggle on the department). Then on the Instructional Offering Configuration,
one can select this department for certain classes (e.g., lectures). This
externally managed department can have a different set of rooms than the
department of the subject area of the course. The primary purpose of these
external departments is the ability to timetable some classes (e.g., large
lecture rooms or computing labs) centrally, outside of the departmental
problems.
