As a comment, this can happen if you don't paste in plain text, but rather table values from a spreadsheet application like Excel.

The problem was indeed copying from Excel. This appears to be corrected in previous commits, though it'd be nice to provide some error handling if improper text is submitted (e.g., blank text, "asdf", etc.).
