I think you should remove the body styles from the media queries and instead make it a global style outside. Also there seems to be something wrong with the width.

I think you should reduce the width to 850px that would be better.

I don't have any comments since you have just started on your desktop changes. I can make a suggestion. If you start with creating desktop version elements, then create mobile and desktop classes, it might make it easy to plan and implement further changes.
