Merge a couple of fixes from the `release` branch #48

I needed these changes to release Git for Windows v2.41.0-rc0. This PR exists more for documentation purposes than to solicit reviews "after the fact" 😁

Merging, to unblock the upcoming -rc1 release (the release branch would not fast-forward to main, causing a failure in the release-git workflow).
