Map icon looks like handcuffs #631

The toolbar icon for Map View looks like a pair of handcuffs. Just sayin'. 😄

Adding another node or edge would solve the problem, in my view.

If someone has a nice artwork that was similar but perhaps had a branch coming off instead of just 2 nodes, we could consider using that instead.

How's this? https://fontawesome.com/icons/code-branch?style=solid

I can design another from scratch if this doesn't work.

@sdaitzman Could you also design modern app icon? I guess it is too simple and doesn't show purposes/powers of GitUp.

sdaitzman commented 4 years ago

Sure, I could do that! What values should it communicate? Is there any specific imagery/color that's important to include?

lolgear commented 4 years ago

@sdaitzman Well, core features of GitUp are:

Well, we can omit "Toolbox" feature for end-user. But others are awesome. I don't even use mouse or trackpad when I am in GitUp. Magic. And when I need to undo something like bad rebase, I just press cmd + z...

Maybe Core Concept (Map View) should be captured. I think that a message that this App Icon should deliver is Text processor but for Git. ( Too majestically, haha. )

Another masterpiece for end-user ( my opinion only ) is Notes.app by Apple. Mac version gives you simple app to manage your notes powered by markdown text editing with keyboard shortcuts for everything.

Maybe this icon issue should be discussed in a separate issue? This issue might be more appropriate: https://github.com/git-up/GitUp/issues/216

How's this? https://fontawesome.com/icons/code-branch?style=solid

I like it. Maybe the inner circle should be bigger to better represent what the commits look like?

sdaitzman commented 4 years ago

For both this issue and #216 is there any requirement of format? Must it be an open format, or are Illustrator/Sketch files alright?

lucasderraugh commented 4 years ago

@sdaitzman In reference to the toolbar icons, the files ultimately need to be rendered back into png with alpha. The toolbar items are currently 30x30 in their 2x representation, 15x15 for 1x displays. Might really limit having vertical circles with holes in the center. See https://github.com/git-up/GitUp/tree/master/GitUp/Application/Application.xcassets/icon_nav_map.imageset
