The built-in Google Reader keyboard shortcut [ J ] already does this... use [
Shift ] + [ / ] (i.e. [ ? ]) to see all the keyboard shortcuts

I am afraid it doesn't. In expanded view [j] behaves just like [n] and selects
next item. It do not mark current item though.
Navigation
j/k: next/previous item
n/p: item scan down/up (list only)
Acting on items
m: mark item as read/unread

Then you must have modified some other settings in Reader that are breaking it.
I process over 17k items a month using just [ J ] and [ K ]. I never have to
manually mark items as read. I have confirmed this with 3 other Greader power
users.
