New features to add #114

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
Please describe the feature or enhancement in as much detail as possible:
I really like your extension as it adds (and removes) so many features to
Gmail. I have created a concept for Gmail on how it should look like. Can you
please add those features?

Concept is here: http://robotkoer.deviantart.com/art/Gmail-concept-3-0-254011207

Moving the search box: Possible. I'll consider it.

Moving Share and G+ notifications into the user menu: Not possible. It would
require removing and re-inserting the elements which would break the link
between them and Gmail JS listeners.

Visual storage meter: Possible but it would be JS and not CSS. CSS is much
faster so I avoid JS features whenever possible. In addition giving an element
like that so much visual weight when it's not very useful doesn't seem like a
good feature (if you're only using 1% and your Gmail storage limit is always
rising, it's extremely unlikely that you'll ever hit the cap, certainly not for
years. Why would you want to look at it everyday?)

Settings menu additions: Again, I can move the elements there but they won't do
anything.

Shrink reply field: This is a planned feature. Star Issue 109

Mark as read toggle: That is a lab feature. I don't support labs because it
make the module very difficult to maintain

Move-to removed: Already a feature

Custom button groupings: I would have to design some kind of GUI to make
grouping easy. It's not possible the way the Module options pages are setup
now. Otherwise I would have to make an options for every possible grouping
combination (hundreds)

Moving account activity in the menu: This is a security risk. Unlike the
storage options, knowing when and where your account was last accesses *is*
something you should be looking at regularly. In addition, as above, moving in
the menu would break it (it would always show the value assigned on load and
would not update live. The link to more details would also break.)

Remove gadgets: already planned. Star Issue 92

Mail menu removed: already a feature

Gbar removed: You'll be happier with the new Google bar (http://goo.gl/RYjgO)
which is combined with the header. Cleaner and saves 16px in comfortable
density.

Remove tips and copyright: already a feature

Sorry to be a downer. If these feature become easier to implement for a large
audience then I'll do them. You should learn some CSS. You can do a lot of this
yourself (it's easy to do it for one person. It's difficult to make tools that
will work for everyone). Just click New Module in the dashboard, select the New
option and you can start entering CSS.

1) TY
2) Ok, I won't use them anyway... I just made it as I might need it.
3) It's in Gmail already... I think that Preview Pane adds it
4) Ok
5) Starred :)
6) But can you make that kind of feature yourself?
7) Yup :)
8) Ok
9) Gmail notifies me whenever there's something using my account, Preview Pane
makes it seen ONLY when I don't open any message (so that means 1st time I open
Gmail). Any ideas on where else can you put it?
10) It's already in, not planned.... What are you talking about?
11) Yeah, but I wanted that arrow next to inbox item will work as Mail menu
12) Know it, but the point is that I don't use those links at all...
13) Yeah, found it!
All is fine, don't worry ;) THX for the fast answer! I'll probably update my
concept ASAP as I know now what's possible and what's not.

3) Oh really? Mine is just text. Maybe because I purchased a storage upgrade?
6) Possibly. Would be low priority
9) I can move it to many places on the screen (that can be done with absolute
positioning in CSS, I just can't move it into a sub-menu)
10) I have a hide Invites feature but not a hide gadgets feature.
11) Oh I see. Could be possible to separate the arrow from the "Gmail" part of
the menu with CSS. I'll look into it.
12) I'm planning on releasing a module at some point that is just for the
Google Bar.

3) Not sure
6) TY
9) Above the left menu, possible?
10) Hide Invites+Hide Chat=Hide Gadgets unless you have some labs enabled
11) TY
12) Oh, nice :)

9) Yes, definitely possible. Star Issue 115
10) That hides all the elements but not the parent container (the resizable
whitespace that holds all of that. That need to be hidden as well on smaller
screens to make space for labels)

9) Done
10) http://www.twitpic.com/7bjjpv Those buttons are hidden by enabling Hide
Chat and Hide Invites. I'm using ONLY your extension to tweak Gmail. So -
what's not hidden?

I have a huge list of labels that are not visible in that screenshot until I
mouseover the sidebar because that white box that is supposed to hold
chat/gadgets is still there.

1) Disable your extension
2) Click Chat or Invites icon (IDK which one you have open)
3) Enable your extension
4) Yours should work like mine :)

Finally updated my concept!
Stuff you didn't notice before:
1)"Revert to the old look temporarily" removed (Settings menu)
2)Search, Account, Settings buttons size decreased
3)Reply textbox is now *smaller* (not removed, as it's not very nice to use
only upper buttons and I can't see bottom buttons anymore) to waste less space
4) Blank space removed at upper part of "Everything else"
5) Preview Pane button removed
(https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/dheionainndbbpoacpnopgmnihkcmnkl or
some other Gmail-related extension had/has it, yours doesn't :( )

Also, do you already work on Gmail minimalist new features/Gbar minimalist/Mark
as read button? Fail/win?
